Unit 4 Reading How life began on the earth
Step 1 warm up(4mins):
Questions : Do you like the shining stars in the sky at night? Then show a picture of the solar system. Then ask if there is life on these planets and How did life begin on the earth?
Introduce the religious and scientific theories for the beginning of life on the earth. Religious legends: China—— Pangu / Nvwa Western countries—— the God Scientific theories: Big Bang
Step 2. Pre-reading(1min)
Ask the ss to look at the tittle and the picture in the passage and predict what the passage is talking about.
Step 3. Fast -reading (Individual work, 10mins)
Task 1. read the text quickly and match the main idea of each paragraph. Para. 1 The importance of water for life
Para. 2 The arrival of humans and their influence on the earth.
Para. 3 The formation(形成) of the earthA widely accepted theory Para.4 of the origin of the universe.
Para.5 The development of plants and animals on the earth.
Task 2. introduce the structure of an exposition and ask the ss try to divide the
whole passage into 3 parts according to the structure and conclude a key word of each part.
Step 4 careful reading. (20 mins)
Para 1 introduces the big bang theory, it is quite easy so we will get through it quickly.
Para 2 deals with the formation of the earth. So i will give some key words and let the ss find the corresponding details. Big Bang

Para 3 tells us the importance of water so some questions are prepared to help the ss understand it, such as:
Why there is no life on other planets like Mars?
What is the significance(重要性)of the continued presence of water on the earth? Para 4 we focus on the development of life.
Para 5 Human beings appears. Questions:
1.What appeared later? What do they look like? 2. What problems do they cause?
Step 5 Discussion (5mins)
1.What will life look like in the future, such as human beings? Draw a picture to show your ideas.
2.What should we human beings do if we still want to live on the earth? Ss can choose one to discuss and make a presentation.
Step 6 Homework.
1.Search the Internet for the information of the development of life. 2.Read and learn good words, phrases or structures from Reading.
