By the end of this lesson, students are expected to

  • understand new words: crime, proof, suspect, innocent, guilty, vase, purchase, mud, spotless, deny, admit;
  • further develop their logical thinking in analyzing the case and Ken’s qualities as well as critical thinking in commenting on the interview from different angles;
  • develop a critical attitude towards facts.
 
Teaching focus
  • guiding students to understand the function of the case in the interview.
 
Potential difficulties:
  • analyzing Ken’s qualities as a good detective;
  • understanding Detective Ken’s logic in solving the case.
 
Teaching procedure:
Stages Students’ Activities Purposes
Warm-up Free talk about detectives. To elicit the topic and teach new words
Pre-
reading
Read and tell the text type.
Predict Pansy’s questions.
To guide students to focus on the text feature
While-
reading
Read and find out Pansy’s questions.
Comment on Ken’s answer to Pansy’s first question.
To guide students to clarify how the interview carries on
Read again, clear out the case in their own ways and share with each other. To help students have a general idea of the case
Read and explain why Ken likes being a detective.
Summarize a good detective’s qualities.
To help students further understand the case’s function in the interview
Post-
reading
Comment on Pansy.
Discuss whether it is a successful interview or not.
To help students build a critical attitude towards facts
Homework 1. Review the new words.
2. Suppose you are Pansy/Ken/Jill/Jenny/Mr. Jones, retell the case.
3. Write an outline for Pansy’s article.
