Rethink, Reuse, Recycle!
Do you often throw away things you don’t need anymore? Have you ever thought about how these things can actually be put to good use? Nothing is a waste if you have a creative mind.
You have probably never heard of Amy Hayes, but
she is a most unusual woman. She lives in a house in the
UK that she built herself out of rubbish. The windows
and doors come from old buildings that were pulled
down around her town. The top of the house is an old
boat turned upside down. And the gate in front of her
house is made of rocks and old glass bottles.

Amy isn't the only one who is good at recycling. Jessica Wong from Hong Kong uses old clothes to make bags. She has been doing this for a few years now. She opened a small shop to sell her bags, and she has also set up a website to sell them online. She especially likes to use old jeans to make handbags. Her bags are cute and useful. “I plan to write a book about new ways to use old clothes.” she said. “I hope people can read my book and enjoy it.”
Wang Tao set up a small business in Shanghai four years ago. He is
known for using iron and other materials from old cars to make beautiful
art pieces. Some are large pieces that look like animals or humans, and
some are smaller pieces you can put at home. The more popular works
can even be seen in art shops around the city. Wang Tao hopes to set up
a “mental art” theme park to show people the importance of environmental
protection.

Not only can the art bring happiness to others, but also shows that
even cold, hard iron can be brought back to life with a little creativity.

Steps Teachers' Activities Students' Activities Purpose
Step I
Leading-in.
Do warm--up activities by watching a short video. Watch a short video and think what the video is about. To arouse the Ss' interest of study.
Step II
Pre-reading.
Show two pictures to the Ss. Look at the two pictures and guess what they are and what they are made of. To pave the way of the reading part.
Step III
Skimming.
Show the first reading skill to the Ss and have Ss answer two questions. Read the passage quickly and answer two questions. To enable the Ss to practice the first reading skill-Skimming.
Step IV
Scanning.
Show the second reading skill to the Ss and have Ss match the names with the materials and works. Read the passage quickly again and match. To enable the Ss to practice the second reading skill-Scanning.
Step V
A game.
Show the rules of the game to the Ss. Get to know the rules and join in the activities actively. To arouse Ss’ interest in the following parts.
Step VI
Detailed reading.
Have the Ss read paragraphs 2,3&4 carefully and answer the questions of each paragraph. Read paragraphs 2,3&4 carefully and answer the questions of the three paragraphs.
Get the envelopes when answering the questions right.
To enable the Ss to practice another reading skill-Detailed reading.
StepVIIRetelling. Show the last reading skill- A mind map.
Give the Ss an example on how to do retelling.
Ask the Ss to retell another two persons’ stories in their own words according to the mind map.
Retell Amy Hayes or Jessica Wong’s stories in their own words according to the mind map.
Also get envelopes if they also do a good job in this part.
To enable the Ss get a new reading skill-A mind map and have the Ss get a better understanding of the passage by retelling.
StepVIIIGroup work. Have the Ss watch a short video and read a letter from the earth.
Guide the Ss to work in groups and choose a leader.
Have the Ss discuss and write their ideas down.
Discuss what they can do to help protect the earth.
Choose a leader.
Write the ideas down and have the leader read their ideas out in the front of the class.
 
To encourage the Ss to express their ideas creatively and communicate with others.
StepIX
Moral education.
Guide the Ss to open their envelopes and look for the six magic words. Then guide them to stick th six words on the blackboard in the right order. Open the envelopes and find the six magic words.
Stick the words on the blackboards in the right order.
Read the sentence made up of the six words aloud.
To enable the Ss to take action to save the earth in their daily lives.
StepXSummary. Have the Ss summarize what we have learnt. Summarize what we have learnt with the teacher. To have a whole understanding of this period.
StepXIAssignment Assign homework. Review what they have learnt. To review the whole lesson.
