Teaching Aims:
After class, you can:                                                 
  1. understand the main idea and the details of the  passage;
  2. grasp the writing strategy of an introduction;
  3. share your opinions about how to value and spread our
     national treasures;
  4. give some opinions on the development of traditional
      Chinese culture and culture export.
Important points:
1. The understanding of the passage
2. Language strategies of reading context and writing skills, including giving examples, exaggeration and side description.
3. Establish cultural confidence and have multi-culture awareness.

   To put the writing skills into practice.

Teaching Preparations
Before class reading material which introduces William Shakespeare and The Tragedy of Hamlet.
A piece show of Qinqiang.
Teaching Procedures
ⅠLeading In (5 minutes)
1 Show the first part of the Qingqiang show and ask the students whether they like it and to give their reasons.
【Designing purpose】
To help the students think about the problems in the development of Chinese traditional culture especially in Chinese traditional operas.
2 Sensing the topic
Show the topic to the students and ask the students to guess what the passage is about. Check the before-class reading.
【Designing purpose】
To arouse the students’ interests and prepare the students for the reading.
3 Give the students 2 pictures of 2 performances and find out the differences and similarities between them.
When the students are preparing, give the students a chart to inspire them. Write down the students’ answers in the column for later use.

     To remind the students of the expressions they knew to describe a performance.
【Teaching Tips】
For the leading part, the teacher don’t have to help the students to think deeply and mistakes are allowed for the students.
In this part, the students only fill in the column of Your Ideas. The column of The Author’s Ideas is for later use.
Ⅱ Extensive Reading (5 minutes)
1 Read for the main idea.
Ask the students to read for the main idea and do the multiple choices to find out the author’s writing purpose.
Choose the author's purpose in writing the passage.
A. To prove that Peking Opera is a better way to perform Hamlet.
B. To inform the readers how to perform Hamlet through Peking Opera.
C. To share the unique experience of seeing a Peking Opera version of Hamlet.
D. To make a comparison between Eastern and Western cultures.
2 Before starting the reading for the main idea, the teacher suggests the students pay attention to the writing order of the article.
3 Ask the students to divide the passage into 3 parts according to the order of time.

To help the students to have an extensive impression and the structure of the passage.
To prepare the students for the intensive reading.
Ⅲ Intensive reading(15 minutes)
   1 Divide the students into 3 groups. Assign each group to one part of the passage and finish the exercises accordingly.
    2 Ask the first group to finish the blanks in part one.
      Give the students some further questions to think about.
  1. Do you know a lot about Hamlet?
  2. Why does the author think he know a lot about Hamlet?
      Ask the students to find out 3 reasons from paragraph 1.
【Designing purpose】
    Help the students to read logically and think about the writer’s purpose of writing his knowledge of Hamlet. Lead out a conclusion that the Peking Opera Hamlet meets the author’s culture background. Help the students to accumulate more output materials for later use.
3 Ask the second group to fill in the blanks in the second part and finish more tasks.
  1. In what order is this part arranged?
  2. Ask the students to find out the words that indicates time order in paragraph 3-4. Give the students writing assistance that when writing an experience, pay attention to the symbol words of time.

     Help the students to know some useful symbol words indicating time.
  1. Ask the student the means of characters and study in this part. Tell the students that the same words may have different meanings. When reading, they have to pay attention to the reading context.

  1. Help the students to go back to the chart describing the differences and similarities between western and Chinese opera. Teach the students 3 methods of description: giving examples, exaggeration and side description.

4 Game
Each group is given a piece of paper with a key word on it. Ask each group to describe the words on the paper using the 3 writing skills. The rest of the two group guess what word is on the paper.

Enable the students to try to put the writing skills in practice.
【Teaching Tips】
The chart is the same one with the one in the Leading In part. This procedure is also a call back to the former part.
5 Ask the last group to fill in the blanks in the last part and answer more questions:
  1. Does the author know any Chinese ?
  2. Now that the author doesn’t know any Chinese, he can still feel the emotions in the opera. Does language really matter in art?

To lead out the conclusion that art if beyond words.
Ⅳ Think and Share(10 minutes)
Ask the students to discuss in groups and answer the questions.
1 Does the author like the show? Why?

Lead out the conclusions of what we should do when to spread our brilliant culture to other countries.
2 Do you like Peking Opera? Watch the second part of the performance of Qingqiang, and give out your ideas.

Lead out the conclusion of what we should do when to protect and develop traditional Chinese culture.
3 Value promotion
Show the reason that the students gave why they don’t like traditional opera and the solutions they gave in the same slide. Tell the students in the process of developing, we my face problems but finally we can solve them.
4 Call back the topic.
Ask the students to think what Hamlet and Peking Opera in the topic stand for. Ask the students to share their opinions about when Chinese traditional culture going abroad and developing at home.

Deepen the understanding of the topic and arouse further thinking.
