Teaching Material
The material is from Go for it 8A. It is a reading part. The passages in Grade 8 are mostly longer than those in Grade 7 and harder to read. This article is about the famous cartoon character: Mickey Mouse. Yet it is not any funny story that happened to Mickey, just some basic facts. Students may be not so interested in it. So the teacher should work out some ways to activate students.
2Teaching Objective
1. Knowledge Objective:
Words and phrases about Mickey Mouse: a famous symbol in American culture, such as, be famous for, come out, in the 1930s, be ready to do, the first to do, not as...as
2. Ability Objective:
1) Students should be able to understand the passage, to read the story with emotion and to retell the article.
2) Students should be aware of the cartoon characters which are symbols of Chinese and American culture.
3. Emotional Objective:
Students should learn from Mickey Mouse. Never give up when they face problems.
 
3Teaching Important and Difficult Points
1. To get to know the main idea and details of this passage.
2. The article is not a story but some basic facts. Thus it may be a little difficult to understand and retell.

4.1.1教学活动
活动1【导入】Duty Report
Five students give the class a show about TV programs.
Questions:
1). What does the boy think of game shows?
2). How does the girl like scary movies?
3). What do they decide to watch at last?
Let students check if they make some mistakes in their duty report. And the teacher and students comment on it together.
活动2【导入】Lead-in
T: What do you think of their duty report?
Ss: wonderful, funny, great, fantastic, excellent…
T: What do they decide to watch at last?
Ss: Mickey Mouse.
T: What’s your favorite cartoon? And why do you like it?
Ss: …
T: Great. Today we will learn a passage about Mickey Mouse. I know most of you have read the passage. So can you tell me, is it a story?
Ss: No.
T: Right. It’s not a story, so it maybe not as interesting as the video we watched before class. But, after reading the passage, you will learn a lot of facts about Mickey Mouse. You will know him better and what’s more, the winner will get a very good prize about Mickey Mouse. Are you ready?
Ss: Yeah. 
T: Then let’s go.
活动3【导入】Listening
Listen to the article and match the main idea of each paragraph.
Para. 1             The reason why Mickey Mouse became so popular
Para. 2             Mickey Mouse's achievement
Para. 3             A brief introduction to Mickey Mouse     
Check the answers together.
活动4【讲授】Read and Answer
1. The Best Readers
Students are divided into three big groups. Each group will read one passage and the group which reads the best gets 3 points, the next one gets 2 points and the last one gets 1 point.
2. Mr. or Ms. Mickey Mouse
The teacher presents a lot of Mickey Mouse heads with numbers on it. After reading each paragraph, they can choose a number and try to answer the question behind the number with books closed. If the question is hard, students can have 5 seconds to find the answer from the book. One point for each question.
Q1: What is Mickey Mouse a symbol of?
Q2: What does Mickey Mouse look like?
Q3: What was his first cartoon?
Q4: When and where did his first cartoon come out?
Q5: Who created him?
Q6: How many cartoons did Walt Disney make in the 1930s?
Q7: Why did Mickey Mouse become so popular?
Q8: Who is his girlfriend?
Q9: What problems did Mickey have in his early films?
Q10: What did Mickey do when he was lucky and had many problems?
Q11: Did people want to be like Mickey?
Q12: What happened on November 18, 1978?
Q13: Are today's cartoons as simple as little Mickey Mouse?
Q14: Do people still know and love him?
3. Review each paragraph.
After asking and answering the questions, students go through the passage with the teacher together and the teacher gives some key words on the blackboard.
Para 1: culture --> Mickey Mouse --> black --> SW --> sound/music --> WD --> rich --> 1930s, 87
Para 2: popular? --> common --> unlucky --> problems --> ready to... --> see...win --> be like
Para 3: Nov.18, 1978 --> the first to... --> not so...as --> know & love
活动5【活动】Retell
Students have 3 minutes to work in groups and practice retelling each paragraph. The teacher will pick one student from each group to retell the three paragraphs separately.
活动6【活动】Discussion
1. Do you want to be like Mickey? Why?
2. Do you think Walt Disney is a smart man? Why?
3. What cartoon character is a symbol of Chinese culture? Why is the character popular?
活动7【作业】Homework
1. Draw a picture of Mickey Mouse.
2. Write a summary of the passage in less than 10 sentences
