Teaching goals

  1. Listen to three dialogues to get some useful expressions to complain
  2. Write the main part of a complaint letter
 
Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
  Present photos of students’ campus in spring to stimulate students’ urge to go traveling and encourage students to express their opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of travelling.
  1. Do you like travelling?
  2. What kind of tour do you prefer, travelling independently or going on a guided tour through a travel agency?
(Various answers are possible. By discussing this topic they may realize the conflicts between tour guides and tourists and the improper ways they deal with these problems in some cases.)
Step 2 Reading task
  Ask students to read an advertisement to find out the answers to the following questions.
  1. What can you experience on this tour?
  2. How will the travel agent deal with the problem that tourists don’t see a whale?
(Prepare a form and give some hints. If students can’t give a complete answer to the first question, the form will be shown to help them.)
Step 3 Listening task
  1. Listen to three dialogues between tour guides and some tourists after the tour to find out what these tourists are dissatisfied with and how they want their problems solved. (Questions with multiple choices)
  2. Listen to tourists’ complaints and ask students to repeat those sentences together.
Step 4 Discussion
  Prepare three situations for students to discuss.
  1. What problems are you likely to meet with in these situations?
  2. In what way do they want their problems solved?
Situations
  1. You bought a pair of shoes online but you are dissatisfied with this purchase.
  2. When you were having dinners in your school’s canteen, you found some problems.
  3. You joined in our school’s sports meeting but feel dissatisfied with it in many ways.

Step 5 Writing task
  1. Ask students to write down their complaints and requirements they discussed with the help of the given useful words and expressions.
